Spanish league ratings, Portuguese club systems, and how to match your UK level to local competition on holiday.
Walking into a Spanish club as a UK player can feel like stepping into a different sport. The ratings, the terminology, and the intensity of social play all differ from what most British players are used to. Understanding how your level translates abroad is the key to finding the right sessions, the right partners, and the right amount of challenge.
UK vs Spain Ratings
The UK uses the LTA padel rating system, typically from 1.1 (beginner) to 5.1 (advanced). Spain uses the Federacion Espanola de Padel categories, which run from Quinta (lowest) to Primera (highest), with an additional professional tier. A rough rule of thumb: a UK 2.1 to 2.2 player maps to Spanish Tercera or Segunda depending on match toughness. A UK 3.1 player is comfortably Segunda and may hold their own in regional Primera social sessions. The biggest difference is consistency; Spanish club players train more regularly and make fewer unforced errors.
Do not be intimidated by the terminology. Spanish clubs are welcoming, and most professionals speak enough English to place you correctly. The key is honesty about your level.
- UK 1.1–1.2 ≈ Spanish Quinta (beginner social)
- UK 2.1–2.2 ≈ Spanish Tercera (intermediate club)
- UK 2.3–3.1 ≈ Spanish Segunda (advanced club)
- UK 3.2+ ≈ Spanish Primera (elite social / regional competition)
Portuguese Club Systems
Portugal uses a similar structure but with more emphasis on tournament grading. Most clubs run open social sessions without strict level caps, then separate competitive ladders by tournament performance rather than self-assessment. This means a Portuguese club can feel more welcoming to visitors, but you should still be honest about your level when booking. The Algarve in particular has a strong expat community, so English-speaking groups are common at most levels.
Lisbon clubs tend to be faster and more fitness-focused than their Algarve counterparts. If you prefer a tactical, placement-based game, the Algarve is often a better match.
- Portuguese clubs favour open social play over strict grading
- Tournament results determine competitive ladder placement
- Algarve clubs often have English-speaking groups
- Lisbon clubs tend to be more competitive and fitness-focused
Self-Assessment Before You Book
Be honest with yourself. If you have only played a handful of times and struggle with lobs, you will enjoy a holiday far more in beginner-friendly sessions than in advanced groups where rallies end in three shots. Ask your regular playing partner for an honest opinion; they often rate you more accurately than you rate yourself. Consider whether your strength is tactical or technical; Spanish coaching tends to emphasise court positioning and patience, which rewards tactical players even if their smash is not perfect.
Remember that a padel holiday is supposed to be fun. There is no shame in playing at a lower level abroad. The goal is enjoyable rallies, not ego.
- Ask your regular partner for an honest level assessment
- Consider your strengths: tactics vs raw technique
- Be conservative; you will enjoy the trip more if rallies last
- If unsure, book a mixed session and let the coach place you
Finding Your Level on Holiday
Most of our partner clubs offer an initial assessment session on day one. A club pro watches you rally for fifteen minutes and suggests the right groups for the week. Do not feel awkward about this; it is standard practice and ensures everyone enjoys their matches. If you are between levels, we usually recommend the lower group for the first day. It is easier to move up than to recover from a bruising first session.
During the week, most clubs run graded social mornings and open afternoons. Use the mornings for competitive play at your level and the afternoons to experiment with different partners.
The right level makes every rally satisfying. Too easy and you get bored; too hard and you tense up. Aim for sessions where you win roughly half the points, and you will return home a better player than when you arrived.
